Providence Home Groups – Updated
Later this month several weekly groups will begin. They will feature Bible study, prayer, and the opportunity to make new friends. The aim is to include not only Providence regulars but also those unlikely to attend a Sunday morning service. The Real Jesus will be the theme for nine weeks, late September through November, as each meeting will focus on a passage from John’s Gospel. Whimsical Victoria Underground stops , leaders and locations are as follows. Please speak to a leader or host if you’re interested in attending.
Arbutus: (Sunday Evenings): Peter Ellison & Benton Mischuk, meeting at the Ellison home on Arbutus… where else?
Cathedral: (Wednesdays, from September 21): Bryn Stephenson, at his apartment at Vancouver & Meares Streets, not far from Christ Church Cathedral.
Cedar Hill: (Tuesdays, from September 27): Bruce Peterson, meeting at Al & Marcia Wood’s home near Cedar Hill and McKenzie.
Christmas Hill: (Thursdays, from September 22): Jeff Candell & Dean Christy, meeting at the Candell home… at the NW foot of Christmas Hill.
Harbour: (Wednesdays from September 28): Ed & Kandy Stephenson; meeting at the Peter & Edith DeGreef’s home in View Royal.
Oak Bay: (Tuesday Evenings): Stephen Bickley & George Macauley, meeting at the Macauley home on Hampshire Road in Oak Bay.
Our New Logo
It has no exact “allegorical” value, and is not supposed to be precisely symbolic… Yet it fits us well for three reasons:
- 1) the obvious- we do live on an island, where boats are a natural and necessary part of life, moreso in Oak Bay, with its two large marinas- and in Victoria boats are not just for the “idle rich”- nearly everyone who lives here travels- or has travelled- to and from the Mainland by boat (BC Ferries).
- 2) the theological- because “light” in Scripture is a metaphor for all things associated with God, the logo for Lighthouse Church is a comparative no-brainer… But God’s providence is an abstraction, a concept- and a deep mystery to us most of the time; something we can only begin to comprehend. Still, we know that it’s there (“the almighty and everywhere present power of God”) and that it affects and determnes all that we do and all that happens to us. So the situation of a sailboat is a parallel- as those who sail it are entirely affected by unseen forces of wind and tide;
- 3) the historical- in early Christian art, dating from the First Century, the church is often depicted by a boat- by an image of Noah’s Ark- the only possible refuge from impending judgment. So our designer did his best to make the sailboat somewhat ark-like, with its broad, sturdy boards and beams.
