Oak Bay:  (Tuesday Evenings): Stephen Bickley & George Macauley, meeting at the Macauley home on Hampshire Road in Oak Bay.

• 1) the obvious- we do live on an island, where boats are a natural and necessary part of life, moreso in Oak Bay, with its two large marinas- and in Victoria boats are not just for the “idle rich”- nearly everyone who lives here travels- or has travelled- to and from the Mainland by boat (BC Ferries).

• 2) the theological- because “light” in Scripture is a metaphor for all things associated with God, the logo for Lighthouse Church is a comparative no-brainer…  But God’s providence is an abstraction, a concept- and a deep mystery to us most of the time; something we can only begin to comprehend. Still, we know that it’s there (“the almighty and everywhere present power of God”) and that it affects and determnes all that we do and all that happens to us. So the situation of a sailboat is a parallel- as those who sail it are entirely affected by unseen forces of wind and tide;
  
•  3) the historical- in early Christian art, dating from the First Century, the church is often depicted by a boat- by an image of Noah’s Ark- the only possible refuge from impending judgment. So our designer did his best to make the sailboat somewhat ark-like, with its broad, sturdy boards and beams.
